Search patent file histories. Explore what AI can reveal.
AI Patent Tools brings together projects for searching public patent records, exploring prosecution histories, and understanding how AI can assist with patent research.
Search office-action text across patent applications. Inspect the documents, focus the results, and optionally use your own AI account for summaries.
Better tools for working with patent information
Patent databases contain a wealth of technical information, but finding the right records can be difficult. These projects explore ways to retrieve relevant documents, organize the results, and provide useful context for AI-assisted analysis.
Try the tools
Office Action Text Search runs in your browser with your free USPTO ODP key. AI summaries are optional.
Office Action Text Search
Search public office-action text, highlight relevant passages, and group documents by application. Focus by art unit, examiner, document type, and classification. Optionally summarize a document using your own OpenAI or Google account.
More projects to come
Additional patent research experiments, demonstrations, and selected results will be added as they are prepared for publication.
Working with public patent data
Office Action Text Search uses public patent prosecution records from the USPTO. Its focus is office action text and the information that helps researchers locate and organize those documents.
Searches request records directly from the USPTO Open Data Portal. Details about data sources, limitations, and update dates will accompany each published tool or report.
Results and write-ups from these projects
Research produced with these tools — including work on how examiners apply subject-matter eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101 — will be posted here as it is written up.
Selected findings, supporting data, and explanations of the research methods will appear here as they are prepared for publication.
Why this site exists
Public patent file histories offer a detailed record of prosecution practice. Searching and interpreting those records at scale can still be difficult, particularly without specialized tools or programming experience.
AI Patent Tools is a collection of projects, data, and results built while trying to make that work more approachable. It explores the use of browser tools, structured retrieval, and AI-assisted analysis in patent research.
The site is maintained by Todd Breuer, a patent attorney. New material will be added over time, with the status and limitations of each project explained alongside it.
This is an informational research site. Nothing here is legal advice, and visiting the site does not create an attorney-client relationship.
